Autonomous systems can overcome the inflexibility and associated cost of imperatively programmed automation. In this thesis we propose a framework, based on set-theory, to optimize, plan, and describe all relevant components, the environment and possible actions of autonomous systems. This allows us to automatically compute a recursive, hierarchical decomposition of the planning problem, which is the key to handling large, real-world problems that cover both discrete and continuous properties.
